Newman Lecture and Symposium to Commemorate Sesquicentennial of First Vatican Council

An upcoming lecture and symposium hosted by the National Institute for Newman Studies (NINS), in conjunction with the University, will commemorate the 150th anniversary of the start of the First Vatican Council.

Dr. William L. Portier, the Mary Ann Spearin Chair of Catholic Theology at the University of Dayton, will present the plenary lecture at the 2019 Spring Newsman Lecture and Symposium. The First Vatican Council, John Henry Newman and the Making of a Post-Christendom Church will be held Thursday, March 14, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Gailliot Center for Newman Studies at 211 N. Dithridge St. in Oakland.

Symposium presentations will be held on Friday, March 15, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., also at the Gailliot Center.

The NINS, a non-profit affiliated with Duquesne, facilitates scholarly learning and dialogue on the enduring relevance of John Henry Newman’s life, work and influence to foster intellectual and spiritual growth.
