Rangos Prizes for Students and Faculty Announced

A new competition funded by a longtime supporter of the University is providing Duquesne faculty and students the opportunity to enhance the curriculum so that it remains relevant and prepares students for productive futures.

Rangos Sr.The John G. Rangos Prizes for Students and Faculty, which Provost David Dausey announced earlier this month, was made possible through a gift from the patron of Duquesne’s School of Health Sciences. Rangos, who heads the John G. Rangos Sr. Charitable Foundations, previously chaired Chambers Development Co. and was vice-chairman of the board for USA Waste Services, Inc.

Participants in the competition are invited to submit proposals for courses and materials using traditional teaching and research approaches or that address ways to integrate social media, online sites and other communication strategies to make instruction more effective.

The first year of the competition includes nine student prizes and nine faculty prizes of $1,000 each. The monetary awards will be used to develop classes, course materials and academic programs designed to engage a new generation of Duquesne students and equip them with a core set of ethical/moral values, knowledge and the skills to become leaders in an evolving society. Awardees will be announced Friday, May 10, prior to commencement.

Led by the Office of the Provost, the competition provides drop-in clinics to address questions. They are scheduled for today, Wednesday, March 27, from 3 to 4 p.m. and Friday, March 29, from 10 to 11 a.m. in room 311 of the Administration Building. Details will be announced regarding idea development workshops in April. Completed proposal packets are due Friday, May 3.
