MBA Sustainable Practices Students Place 4th at Case Competition

A team of Duquesne University graduate students selected to participate in the Aspen Institute’s 2019 Business & Society International MBA Case Competition earned a fourth-place finish.

MBA Sustainable Business Practices program students Kevin Dole, Laura Jernegan and Holden Slagel competed against teams from business schools at Boston University, University of Massachusetts, New York University and the University of Michigan.

Duquesne was one of only five teams selected from 25 schools to participate. The Palumbo-Donahue School of Business has participated in competition during the last 10 years, five of which included the team advancing to the final round.

This year, teams in the competition were asked to analyze a case study authored by the Yale School of Management about the Connecticut Green Bank, which is the nation’s first green bank. It was formed in 2011 to promote cleaner, less expensive and more reliable sources of energy while creating jobs and supporting local development. Students were asked to help the Green Bank and Inclusive Prosperity Capital, a non-profit co-created by the bank in 2018, by proposing a new program or enhancement to a current program that would position both organizations for financially sustainable growth.

The Aspen Institute Business and Society Program, founded in 1998, works with business executives and scholars to align business decisions and investments with the long-term health of society—and the planet.
