“Because of the global pandemic, our expectations for this year’s Duquesne Day of Giving were very modest,” David Jakielo, assistant director of annual giving, said. “Our hope each year is to increase the total number of dollars and donors—we never expected it to be our most successful Day of Giving in University history.”

The annual Duquesne Day of Giving is a one-day virtual fundraising campaign in which donations support scholarships, academics, athletics and other programs so students can expand their horizons and access opportunities in the classroom and beyond. This year, donors could also support the Student Success Fund, which provides financial assistance to students in need due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Everyone was incredibly generous both in making gifts and in helping to spread the word about the Day of Giving,” Jakielo said. “It’s always so inspiring to see how much Duquesne means to so many around the world.”

Some of this year’s statistics from the Day of Giving include:

  • Donors hail from 48 states, including Alaska and Hawaii, plus Puerto Rico
  • More than 200 schools, organizations and athletic teams were supported
  • $191,840 in challenge gifts were unlocked.

“I think the Day of Giving was such a success this year because of the human element, or what I like to call the Duquesne Spirit,” Jakielo said. “Our donors saw how resilient our campus community has been this last year and made the decision to rise to the challenge and invest in our students so that they in turn know that brighter days are ahead.”

“At Duquesne, we work toward bigger goals and we instill that in our students—their success is our success,” said Jakielo. “The outpouring of generosity we receive on the Day of Giving each year not only supports our students, it gives them a greater sense of purpose and bolsters their journey on the way to success.”

The 2022 Duquesne Day of Giving will be on Wednesday, Feb. 9.
