Annual Run for Ryan Honors Local Fallen Soldier

The University will again remember Marine Sgt. Ryan H. Lane—a local soldier from Castle Shannon who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2009—at the eighth annual Run for Ryan 5K on campus.

The run will be held this Saturday, April 22, at 9 a.m. beginning at Brottier Commons. Proceeds from the 5K benefit a scholarship fund at Duquesne for student veterans in need of financial assistance.

Army 1st Lt. Joseph Vitti and Marine 1st Lt. Chris Cavanaugh, both former Duquesne students, created the Run for Ryan after hearing of Lane’s sacrifice, to ensure that he would be remembered. The event has raised more than $60,000 since 2010 to support veterans continuing their education.

“The Run for Ryan affords us a time during the year to give pause and to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their country,” said Don Accamando, director of the Office of Military and Veteran Students. “I am honored to work with the student representatives and our campus partners every year as they strive to make this wonderful event even more memorable.”

Registration can be completed online (where donations can also be made) or on race day at the starting line. The $30 entry fee includes a T-shirt, bib and timing chip. Race day packets will be available for pick up on Saturday starting at 8 a.m. on Brottier Commons.

The Run for Ryan is open to the public and facilitated by ROTC cadets and midshipmen and Duquesne students.
