Heinz Endowments President to Discuss Charity and Equity for ‘United Pittsburgh’ Series

Grant Oliphant, president of The Heinz Endowments, will speak at Duquesne on Monday, March 18, as part of the University’s United Pittsburgh speaker series.

Oliphant, who has held several senior management posts with Heinz family foundations for nearly two decades, will present What is the Difference Between Charity and Equity? at 6:30 p.m. in room 104 of College Hall.

Before rejoining The Heinz Endowments in 2014, Oliphant served as president and chief executive officer of The Pittsburgh Foundation for six years. He led a major transformation in the organization’s engagement of key constituents and the development of ground-breaking initiatives, including the launch of The Pittsburgh Promise scholarship program for students in the city’s district and charter schools.

Oliphant frequently leads community conversations around critical issues such as public school reform, civic design, the ongoing sustainability of anchor institutions, domestic violence, riverfront development and various socio-economic concerns. He has taken a prominent role in building advocacy programs to support the work of local nonprofits and the families and individuals they serve.

United Pittsburgh is a new initiative developed by the Center for Catholic Faith and Culture that combines academic courses with a free public speaker series. It focuses on collaboration with the community by providing new insights into Catholic social teaching and promoting civic awareness among the University’s students, faculty and staff. These community forums are open to the public and free of charge.
