Each year, the event provides an opportunity for faculty, staff, students and members of the Pittsburgh community to hear from some of the nation’s leading thinkers on multicultural issues. Saleem Ghubril, executive director of The Pittsburgh Promise, will serve as this year’s keynote speaker.

The Pittsburgh Promise promotes high educational aspirations among urban youth, funds scholarships for post-secondary access and helps to fuel a prepared and diverse regional workforce. Under Ghubril’s leadership, the Pittsburgh Promise has sent more than 8,700 urban youth to college and provided more than $127 million in scholarships over the past 10 years. Duquesne, a founding preferred college partner of the organization, provides housing awards to incoming Promise-eligible undergraduates and offers targeted transition and academic support services to ensure student retention and success.

Ghubril, who assumed leadership of The Pittsburgh Promise in 2008, is an ordained Presbyterian minister and the volunteer pastor of Mosaid Community Church in Pittsburgh. He sits on the boards of The Buhl Foundation, Vibrant Pittsburgh and the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh.

“Saleem’s good work in our community is nothing short of inspiring,” Jeff Mallory, assistant vice president for diversity, inclusion and student advancement, said. “He is a passionate advocate for children, and he’s devoted his life and career to ensuring that all Pittsburgh students are ready and able to continue their education and reach their fullest potential.”

Proceeds from the event benefit tuition assistance for students in financial need.

“The Office of Diversity and Inclusion is privileged to serve the Duquesne community, and we’re proud of the impactful relationships we’ve formed with so many University, community and corporate partners in support of our students,” Mallory said. “Each year we are honored to spend this special evening with a diverse group of individuals who share common values and a commitment to ODI’s mission.”
